The Power of Believing

Helping others believe in their dreams is a key component of leadership.

The great ones have a way of creating heightened belief systems in individuals and then connecting and aligning them with a common purpose.

John Maxwell says that dreams are the centers of our souls, and we must do everything in our power to help turn them into reality. Helping another achieve his or her dreams is one of the greatest gifts we can give to someone. So how do you go about helping someone believe?

First, you could ask them about their dreams. Everyone has them, but are rarely asked to talk about them. Lou Tice teaches us that affirmations are a powerful stimulant. Affirm not only the other person’s dreams, but also tell them that you see qualities in them that make their dreams entirely possible.

Another thing great leaders do is align company objectives with the goals and dreams of their employees. It is a lot easier to help people achieve their own aspirations, than asking them to forget about them while they achieve yours. This is a rare quality, and most leaders don’t take the time.

I’ve known several who say that this is time consuming fluff, and wouldn’t acknowledge it as necessary. “It’s their job. If they don’t do it, we find someone who will.” “We simply need to get the right people in the right seat on the bus.” That’s certainly true, if you are describing the order of things. If you are all about power and control, bless your heart, you had better have all of the answers. However,

“if you want someone to bring their heart and soul to the game every day, you need to know a little something about their heart and soul.”

Sometimes what people need is someone to value their opinion. The best way to show that you value someone is to ask them what they think? Most of us need someone to believe in us. It helps us believe in ourselves. It doesn’t mean we are weak. It means we are all “a work in progress”. When we believe in ourselves, we achieve much more and we enjoy our work. A sense of accomplishment and appropriate encouragement create a positive work environment. Good leaders know how to take this intangible energy straight to the bottom line. People give more of themselves when they are highly motivated.

Magis Leaders behave in ways that help others realize and achieve their true potential. It becomes contagious and highly profitable.
